What You Need to Set Up Shopify Payments (And Why We Ask For It)

Why We Ask For These Documents

When we set up your Shopify store, one of the final steps is connecting your payment processor. This is how you get paid. Shopify Payments requires proof that your business is legally registered, and that the person setting up the account has the authority to do so.

This isn't red tape for its own sake. It protects you. It prevents fraud, ensures your money goes to the right place, and keeps your store compliant with US financial regulations.

Here is exactly what you need to have ready.

📄 What You Need

1. Your EIN Confirmation Letter (CP575G or 147C)
This is the IRS document that proves your Employer Identification Number. If you applied for your EIN online, you received a PDF copy. If you lost it, you can call the IRS at 1-800-829-4933 and request a Letter 147C, which is the official replacement.

2. Your LLC Formation Documents
If you are operating as an LLC, have your Articles of Organization or Certificate of Formation ready. This is the document that proves your business exists in your state.

3. A Government-Issued ID
The name on your ID must match the name on your EIN application. If it doesn't, Shopify will flag the account during verification.

4. Your Business Bank Account Details
You'll need the routing number and account number for the account where you want your payouts deposited.

5. Your Business Address
This must be your physical business address—not a P.O. box. It must match what the IRS has on file for your EIN.

🛠️ How to Prepare

  1. Gather everything into one digital folder. Scan or photograph your documents and save them as PDFs.

  2. Check the names. Make sure the legal name on your EIN, your bank account, and your ID all match. If they don't, correct them before you start setup.

  3. Have your EIN letter ready. If you don't have the CP575G, call the IRS for the 147C before you begin. It is the single most important document you will need.

  4. Log in and follow the prompts. When you're ready, open Shopify Admin > Settings > Payments, and follow the setup steps. Enter your information exactly as it appears on your legal documents.
