How to Buy a Domain and Point It to Shopify (Without Losing Your Mind)

here is a specific moment in every business owner’s journey where they freeze.

They have picked their products. They have picked a Shopify theme. They are ready to launch. And then Shopify asks for their "Domain."

It sounds simple, but this is where a lot of people get stuck. They get confused by DNS records, CNAMEs, and A-records, and they end up leaving their store on a generic myshop.myshopify.com URL.

Here is the truth: A custom domain is the first step to looking like a real, professional brand.

Here is the exact, step-by-step process to buy your domain and point it to Shopify in under 15 minutes.

Step 1: Where to Buy Your Domain

You have two options. You can buy the domain directly through Shopify, or you can buy it from a third-party provider like Namecheap, GoDaddy, or Google Domains.

My Recommendation: Buy it directly through Shopify. It costs roughly the same (usually around $15-$20/year), and it eliminates 90% of the technical headaches. Shopify connects it automatically.

  • If you buy through Shopify: Go to Settings > Domains > "Buy new domain." Type in your business name. If it's available, buy it. Boom. You are done. No pointing required.

  • If you already bought it elsewhere (Namecheap, GoDaddy, etc.): Follow Step 2.

Step 2: The "Pointing" Process (For Domains Bought Elsewhere)

If you bought your domain from another provider, you need to tell that provider to "point" the domain to your Shopify store.

This sounds scary. It is not. You are just copying and pasting two pieces of information.

1. Find the Shopify DNS Settings:

  • In your Shopify Admin, go to Settings > Domains.

  • Click "Connect existing domain."

  • Type in your domain name (e.g., yourbusiness.com).

  • Shopify will give you a page with two important things: A CNAME Record and an A Record. Keep this Shopify page open in one tab.

2. Go to Your Domain Provider:

  • Open a new tab and log into the website where you bought your domain (e.g., GoDaddy or Namecheap).

  • Go to your "Domain List" or "Manage Domains" and look for a button that says "Manage DNS" or "DNS Records."

3. The Copy and Paste (The A-Record):

  • In your DNS settings, look for the A Record.

  • It usually points to an IP address.

  • Copy the IP address that Shopify gave you and paste it into the "Points To" field for the A Record. Save it.

4. The Copy and Paste (The CNAME Record):

  • Look for the CNAME Record (it is often named "www").

  • Shopify will tell you to point it to shops.myshopify.com.

  • Paste that exactly where it says "Points To" for the CNAME. Save it.

Step 3: The Waiting Game (Let the Ink Dry)

Once you update the DNS records, you have to wait.

This is called "DNS Propagation." It is basically the internet routing system updating its map. It can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 24 hours.

Do not panic. Go make a cup of tea. Check back in an hour. Eventually, Shopify will show a green checkmark saying "Connected."

Step 4: The Final Polish (The SSL Certificate)

Once your domain is connected, Shopify automatically secures your site with an SSL certificate (this is what makes the little padlock icon appear next to your URL).

How to check it: Open an incognito window (so you aren't logged into Shopify) and type in your new domain. Look at the URL bar. If there is a padlock icon, you are officially live and secure.

🚨 The One Mistake to Avoid

Do not change your Shopify store URL until you are ready to launch.

When you connect a domain, it takes over as the primary URL. If your store isn't finished yet, don't point the domain. Keep building on your myshop.myshopify.com link until the design is perfect, the products are loaded, and you have run a test order.

💎 The Secret to a Premium Brand

A domain is not just a web address. It is a promise. It tells your customer: "I am not a hobby. I am a business."
