Etsy vs. Shopify: Which One Actually Builds a Brand?

Two ways to sell online. Two very different approaches to building a business.

Etsy and Shopify both help entrepreneurs sell online, but they serve different purposes. Etsy provides access to an established marketplace, while Shopify gives you the tools to build an independent online store.

The real question isn’t simply which platform costs less. It’s which one supports the business you want to build.

The Short Answer

Think of Etsy as renting a booth at a busy craft fair. Shoppers are already there, but you’re competing with other sellers and operating under Etsy’s rules.

Shopify is like opening your own boutique. You control the design, branding, and shopping experience, but you’re responsible for attracting customers.

Etsy provides marketplace exposure. Shopify provides greater independence.

Etsy vs. Shopify: The Key Differences

Audience: Etsy has an established marketplace where shoppers discover products. Shopify requires you to attract customers through SEO, social media, advertising, and other marketing efforts.

Branding: Etsy offers limited storefront customization. Shopify provides greater control over your website’s appearance, navigation, product presentation, and brand identity.

Customer Relationships: Etsy restricts how sellers can use customer information. Shopify gives merchants greater flexibility to develop customer relationships, provided they follow privacy laws and obtain appropriate marketing consent.

Fees: Etsy charges listing, transaction, and payment processing fees. Shopify charges a monthly subscription and payment processing fees.

Products: Etsy focuses on products that meet its creativity and sourcing standards. Shopify supports a broader range of eligible physical products, digital products, and services.

The Fee Reality

Let’s say you sell a handmade item for $50.

On Etsy:

  • Listing fee: $0.20
  • Transaction fee (6.5%): $3.25
  • U.S. payment processing (3% + $0.25): $1.75

Estimated total: $5.20 per sale.

On Shopify Basic:

  • Payment processing (example: 2.9% + $0.30): $1.75
  • Monthly Shopify subscription: Additional fixed expense

Estimated processing cost: $1.75 per sale, plus your subscription.

At 100 sales of $50 each, those simplified transaction costs would be approximately $520 on Etsy versus $175 on Shopify, before Shopify’s subscription and other expenses.

However, Shopify merchants may spend more attracting customers. Lower transaction fees don’t automatically mean higher profits.

These examples exclude advertising, shipping, taxes, and other potential charges. Actual fees depend on your location, plan, and payment arrangements.

Who Controls the Customer Relationship?

This may be the most important difference.

On Etsy, customers shop within Etsy’s marketplace. Sellers must follow Etsy’s policies regarding customer information and marketing.

With Shopify, you have greater control over your storefront and customer experience. You can build an email list with appropriate consent, introduce new collections, and develop relationships beyond the initial purchase.

A transaction generates revenue. A lasting customer relationship helps build a brand.

Branding: Are Customers Remembering Your Product or Your Business?

On Etsy, your products appear within a recognizable marketplace.

On Shopify, you can create a shopping experience that reflects your business—from photography and typography to navigation, storytelling, and product presentation.

Branding isn’t simply placing a logo on a website. It’s the experience customers associate with your business.

A thoughtfully designed e-commerce website communicates what makes your products and your company distinctive.

The Answer: Consider Both

You don’t necessarily have to choose.

Etsy can help eligible sellers reach marketplace shoppers and test product demand.

Shopify provides an independent home for your brand, giving you greater control over design, content, and customer relationships.

Some entrepreneurs benefit from using both platforms, provided they can manage the additional costs and responsibilities.

Choose Etsy for marketplace exposure. Choose Shopify for greater independence. Consider both when they support your business goals.

Build Beyond the Transaction

Neither Etsy nor Shopify guarantees success.

What builds a lasting business is thoughtful branding, consistent customer experiences, and products people value.

The platform is the foundation. Your brand is what makes the business distinctive.
